As an Indian American I’d say that this is accurate but also that a lot of westerners don’t have any understanding of the historical bond between India and Russia. The USSR supported India against US and UK backed Pakistani troops during the war and genocide in what later became Bangladesh. Russia has been a strong ally to India when other countries have not been, and it would be dumb for Modi to dump that history to support a country like Ukraine, which is not an ally of India and has bashed India for holding nuclear weapons in the past. So goes geopolitics.

Beyond that, in a country like India that does not have large natural energy reserves, access to cheap natural gas is crucial for basics like electricity access. Russia is providing that at below market prices

It's not that complicated, what they want can't be satisfied by a peace deal with Ukraine that will be accepted. Vice versa is true for Ukraine, even more-so because they're being invaded. There seems to be no sign of Russia accepting less than a larger chunk of land they've already taken and a neutered Ukraine that can't dictate its own geopolitical future. None of that is acceptable to Ukraine under any side terms. So no deal and no amount of talk is going to change that. Thus both sides will fight till circumstances change. They're not being offered any terms that are better than continuing the war. Every single "negotiation" so far has been a demand that Russia give up all the territory they've gained and pay reparations, in exchange for nothing. Bad deal for Ukraine. They need a peace agreement not a ceasefire.

1. Ukraine has major fortification lines in Donetsk. If they abandon these they leave themselves seriously exposed.
2. A notable percent of Ukraine's army is now unwilling conscripts. Presumably these will be allowed to return home. If war breaks out again in 1-2 years. You will not be able to round these people up quickly. So Ukraine will have a personal issue at the onset of the next war. Russia's army is more volunteer. So if they need to mobilise for round two. They will be able to do so faster.
3. With only a ceasefire and no peace agreement. No one will want to invest capital into Ukraine. The risk &amp; return will not stack up. As at any point Russia can invade and you lose your capital. This is capital Ukraine desperately needs but won't get.
4. Russia will keep its economy on a quasi wartime footing. Accumulating a massive amount of material. They are producing 1200 isklander's, 62,000 Geran's, 4 million 152 mm shells a year right now. Ukraine on the other hand will produce and be gifted relatively less. They desperately need to repair their infrastructure money will be directed here not into munitions. In a couple of years there will be a massive mismatch. Russia knows exactly what it needs and at what quantity to defeat Ukraine in round 2. It will produce this. 
5. With no long term solution and a war likely in the future. Many men may leave Ukraine. Men Ukraine needs to rebuild.

Based on the demands there's basically 0 incentive for Ukraine to not keep fighting. So what if they get pushed back again? That's still losing less land than what the terms moscow is offering.

Meanwhile, sanctions are biting the Russian economy hard, resulting in the war industry winding down due to lack of capital and labor shortages. Meanwhile, rural russia is starting to descend into anarchy due to lack of police presence. Inflation is starting to get out of control. 

Ukraine's main weapon against Russia is finally starting to pay dividends. They would be insane to agree to anything that lifts sanctions on Russia.

All these they should fight to the last Ukrainian posts don't take into account the realities on the ground. Ukraine is just about cooked and Trump knows it, Trump is a shriveled peanut of a human that sees things in purely pragmatic terms. This war will affect how we view Russia as a geopolitical threat, but the only path leading to World War 3 is treating this war in Ukraine like it is somehow a war on Europe.

This is probably what the future looks like. For now, India is not out of the woods yet economically. Still too poor to be taken seriously. Also, is the technology transfer such a big win? Is India's challenge technical know how or political will? Even if embedded as a stakeholder in the product cycle of a critical defense technology, India would still live and die by political will to sustain funding and other things. Or perhaps what you are suggesting is that external collaboration could ensure this better than pure indigenisation.

In my opinion, it's not worth it all. India is right to stay away from this conflict as much it can, considering Russia is aggressor and Ukraine is not  going to put down arms easily (rightly so). All this peace talks are just basically making Ukraine accept Russian demands, which we have no way of making Ukraine agree and no way to promise Russia's credibility. So more away India is, more it is better for us.

We are already catching lot of flak by importing oil, let's not complicate the matter more.

Wrong - Erdogan also engaged with and visited both countries. Their major discussions and negotiations were conducted in Istanbul with Turkish participation and this prepared the groundwork for the Alaska meet. ( In fact Trump was getting ready to fly to Istanbul to meet Putin during his last Middle East trip based on the progress in discussions) .

Why I needed to say this was because the Indian media constantly exaggerated the role being played by Modi and India in bringing peace to this region and from my Ukrainian friends, I also know that they hate India for continuing its strong Russian engagement and would not have considered India a neutral interlocuter.

I think it's unlikely that India with its strong military ties to Russia would've been seen as a neutral party by Ukraine. Inviting Zelensky here would've given Zelensky a platform to criticise Indian links to Russia from Indian soil. 

Moreover, India maintains that Kashmir is a bilateral issue and refuses mediation of any kind. Offering mediation for Russia-Ukraine would've re-raised the Kashmir issue in international media. Of course Pahalgam did that anyway. 

That said, I agree that we have to start taking more active roles in international relations and not be so inward looking all the time. It is difficult to say whether India tried this or not though, because if it did try the diplomatic channels and was met with cold responses then we wouldn't have heard about it.
